The Great
Migration
Over two million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle thunder across the Serengeti and Masai Mara in an endless, ancient cycle — the greatest wildlife show on Earth.
A Circle of Life, Unfolding Before Your Eyes
Nothing in nature prepares you for the thundering hooves of one and a half million wildebeest moving as a single, unstoppable force. The Great Migration is not a single event — it is a continuous, year-round journey dictated by rain, grass and instinct alone.
"To witness a river crossing is to stand at the very edge of life and death — raw, chaotic, and breathtakingly beautiful."
Kudu Untamed Safaris' naturalist guides have spent decades learning to read the land, anticipate river crossings, and position you in exactly the right place at the right moment — so you never miss the spectacle.

When to Witness the Migration
The wildebeest follow the rains in a clockwise loop across the Serengeti ecosystem. Here is what to expect each month of the year.
Calving season begins. Tens of thousands of wildebeest calves born within weeks — an extraordinary and vulnerable spectacle.
Peak calving. Predator action is at its highest. Lions, cheetah and hyena abound. A photographer's paradise.
Herds begin moving north. Green plains are lush with life after the long rains start. Excellent birding.
Long rains arrive. The great herds are on the move toward the Seronera. Dramatic skies and lush scenery.
Herds converge on the Western Corridor. The Grumeti River comes alive. Early river crossing action possible.
Iconic Grumeti River crossings begin. Enormous crocodiles await. Drama unlike anything else in nature.
The most celebrated period. Herds cross the Mara River into Kenya. The iconic crossing experience reaches its peak.
The Mara Triangle teems with animals. Daily river crossings possible. Intense predator–prey encounters throughout.
One of the best months. Crossings continue as herds graze the lush Mara. Big cat sightings are exceptional.
Return crossings as herds begin moving south again. Less crowded than peak season — an insider's choice.
Short rains bring the herds south. Great value season with fewer visitors yet excellent wildlife density.
Herds return to the southern plains. Festive season safaris with magical atmosphere and newly green landscapes.

Tracing the Migration Route
The Migration follows the rains in a great clockwise loop spanning two countries. Understanding this circuit is the key to planning your perfect safari.
Southern Serengeti — Ndutu (Dec–Mar)
The short-grass plains see the herds at their most concentrated during calving. Predators are abundant and extremely active.
Western Corridor — Grumeti (Apr–Jun)
Long rains drive the herds north through the Western Serengeti, culminating in the treacherous Grumeti River crossing.
Masai Mara, Kenya (Jul–Oct)
The great Mara River crossings. This is the Migration's most iconic chapter — chaotic, raw and utterly mesmerising.
Return South — Northern Serengeti (Oct–Dec)
The herds retrace the route south for the short rains, offering quieter, more exclusive crossing encounters.

Truly Tailor-Made
No two Kudu safaris are identical. Every itinerary is crafted from scratch around your dates, interests, budget and travel style.
Words From the Wild
We watched seven river crossings in four days. Our guide Samuel knew exactly when and where to be. It was the most extraordinary thing I have ever witnessed in 40 years of travel.
The calving season itinerary was unlike anything we expected. A cheetah hunt, lion cubs playing, and over a thousand wildebeest calves — all before 10am on day one. We were speechless.
The mobile camp experience is on a completely different level. Falling asleep to the sound of wildebeest outside your tent, waking to a sunrise over the Mara — Kudu made it effortlessly magical.
