Kenya's Great Wilderness

Where Elephants Wear the Dust of a Continent

Stretching across an astonishing 22,000 square kilometres of southeastern Kenya, Tsavo National Park is the country's largest and most dramatic wilderness — a land of stark contrasts where arid plains meet volcanic lava flows, and where the legendary red elephants of Tsavo roam beneath acacia-dotted horizons. The park is divided into two distinct halves: Tsavo East, a vast expanse of open savannah and the domain of dust-reddened elephant herds; and Tsavo West, a more verdant landscape of volcanic hills, thick bush and crystalline springs.

This is the land that gave rise to the infamous Man-Eaters of Tsavo — the maneless lions that halted railway construction in 1898 — and their descendants still patrol these plains today. But Tsavo is far more than its fearsome history. It is a sanctuary of extraordinary biodiversity, from the underwater hippo-viewing chamber at Mzima Springs to the otherworldly Shetani Lava Flow, a vast black volcanic field frozen in time. With over 500 bird species and landscapes that shift from riverine forest to lava desert, Tsavo offers a wildness that feels genuinely untamed.

As Nairobi-based safari specialists, Kudu Untamed Safaris knows Tsavo intimately — from the best game-drive circuits in the eastern plains to the hidden corners of the western lava fields. Let us craft your perfect Tsavo expedition.

Common Questions

Tsavo Safari — FAQs

Our team answers the questions we hear most often from guests planning their Tsavo safari adventure.

Tsavo's famous red elephants get their striking colour from dusting themselves with the region's iron-rich red volcanic soil. This dusting helps protect their skin from the sun and parasites. The colour is temporary and washes off in water, but during the dry season the elephants appear vividly red — a truly iconic sight that defines Tsavo.

The infamous man-eating lions of Tsavo terrorised railway construction in 1898, killing over 130 workers. While those specific lions are long gone, Tsavo's lions are genetically distinct from those in other parks — many males are maneless or have sparse manes. They are still formidable predators and sightings are common on game drives, though attacks on humans are exceptionally rare today.

Both are excellent but offer different experiences. Tsavo East is vast, arid and open — ideal for spotting large elephant herds and the famous red elephants against endless plains. Tsavo West is more lush and volcanic, with highlights like Mzima Springs, Shetani Lava Flow and diverse terrain. Most itineraries combine both for a complete Tsavo experience.

The best time is during the dry months of June to October and January to March, when wildlife congregates around water sources and viewing is excellent. The long rains (April–May) can make some roads impassable. The short rains (November–December) bring lush scenery and migratory birds but sporadic showers may interrupt game drives.

Tsavo is easily accessible from Nairobi — approximately a 3-hour drive via the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, making it one of the most accessible parks from the capital. Scheduled and charter bush flights from Wilson Airport take about 45 minutes, landing at airstrips in both Tsavo East and West. Kudu Untamed Safaris arranges all transfers as part of your itinerary.

Tsavo National Park is home to lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino — though rhino sightings are rare and concentrated in protected sanctuaries like the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary in Tsavo West. Elephant sightings are exceptional, and Tsavo's unique maneless lions are a major attraction. Buffalo herds are large and frequently encountered.
