Nyungwe Forest Safari — FAQs
Our Rwanda specialists answer the questions we hear most often from guests planning their Nyungwe primate adventure.
June to September is the primary dry season and the best time for chimpanzee trekking with more reliable sightings and drier trails. January to February offers a shorter dry window with excellent conditions. The heavy rains from March to May make hiking challenging but reward visitors with fewer crowds and lush, dramatic scenery. Nyungwe is beautiful year-round — mist and rain are part of the rainforest experience.
Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe is considered moderate. The forest is mountainous, and treks can last anywhere from 1 to 6 hours depending on where the chimpanzees are feeding. Reasonable fitness is required, and sturdy waterproof boots are essential. The trails can be muddy and slippery, especially after rain. Unlike gorilla trekking, the terrain is slightly less steep, but the longer duration can be more demanding.
Yes, the Nyungwe Canopy Walkway operates year-round. It is a 200-metre-long suspension bridge suspended up to 70 metres above the forest floor, offering spectacular views of the rainforest canopy. The walkway is open during daylight hours and tickets can be arranged through the Rwanda Development Board or your Kudu Untamed Safaris consultant. The experience is equally stunning in clear weather or mist.
Combining Nyungwe Forest with Volcanoes National Park for gorilla trekking is the ultimate Rwanda itinerary. The two parks are approximately 5–6 hours apart by road, or you can take a short domestic flight between them. We recommend 3 nights in Nyungwe for chimp trekking and canopy walks, followed by 3 nights in Volcanoes for gorilla trekking. Our Rwanda specialists can design the perfect combined itinerary with seamless logistics.
Nyungwe offers accommodation ranging from ultra-luxury to budget-friendly. One&Only Nyungwe House is the pinnacle of forest luxury with a tea plantation setting, spa and fine dining. Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel offers mid-range comfort with panoramic views. Gisakura Guest House provides budget-friendly forest stays. Most lodges offer full-board dining and can arrange park excursions and guided activities for guests.
Most nationalities can obtain a Rwanda visa on arrival or apply online for the Rwanda eVisa before travel. Single-entry visas cost approximately USD 50. If you are also visiting Uganda and/or Kenya on the same trip, consider the East Africa Tourist Visa (USD 100) which allows multi-entry travel between all three countries for 90 days. Your Kudu Untamed Safaris consultant will provide full visa guidance tailored to your nationality.
