The Jewel of Eastern Rwanda

Rwanda's Big Five Safari Destination

Akagera National Park is a conservation success story like few others in Africa. Once decimated by poaching and encroachment, this remarkable park has been transformed through visionary partnerships — culminating in the reintroduction of lions in 2015 and black rhinos in 2017. Today, Akagera is proudly Rwanda's only Big Five destination, offering a uniquely diverse safari experience that spans savannah, swamp, mountain and lake ecosystems.

Covering 1,122 km² along the border with Tanzania, Akagera is defined by its stunning network of lakes and papyrus swamps fed by the Kagera River. Lake Ihema — the park's centrepiece — offers boat safaris that bring you face to face with hippos, crocodiles and extraordinary waterbird concentrations. Over 500 bird species have been recorded, making it one of Africa's premier birding destinations.

As Rwanda specialists, Kudu Untamed Safaris combines Akagera's game drives, boat cruises and walking safaris with the country's other unmissable experiences — mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park, chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe, and the serene shores of Lake Kivu. Let us craft your perfect Rwanda itinerary.

Big Five Game Drives

Akagera's southern savannah is where the Big Five action unfolds. Open-topped 4x4 vehicles traverse a network of tracks through acacia-dotted plains, hilly woodlands and lakeshore margins. Mornings are best for predator sightings — lions on the hunt, leopards draped over branches and, remarkably, the critically endangered black rhino that has made a triumphant return to these plains. Elephant herds cross the roads with babies in tow and vast buffalo congregations gather near waterholes during the dry season.

  • Morning and afternoon half-day game drives
  • Expert guides with deep knowledge of the park
  • Lion prides and black rhino sightings possible

Common Questions

Akagera National Park — FAQs

Our team answers the questions we hear most often from guests planning their Akagera safari.

June to September is the peak dry season and offers the best wildlife viewing — animals concentrate around water sources and vegetation thins out, making sightings easier. January and February (the short dry season) are also excellent with fewer crowds. The long rains from March to May bring lush landscapes and phenomenal birding, but game viewing is more challenging. October to December sees short rains with intermittent sunshine.

Yes — Akagera is now a complete Big Five destination. Lions were successfully reintroduced in 2015 and black rhinos followed in 2017. Both populations are thriving under the park's intensive protection program. Elephant, leopard and buffalo are all well-established. It is the only park in Rwanda where all Big Five species can be seen on a single safari.

The drive from Kigali to Akagera takes approximately 2.5 hours via the Kayonza road — all tarmac and very scenic. Helicopter charters are also available from Kigali International Airport, reducing travel time to around 30 minutes. Most visitors combine Akagera with other Rwanda destinations, and Kudu Untamed Safaris arranges all transport as part of a seamless tailor-made itinerary.

Absolutely. Akagera is an excellent family safari destination. The park offers well-maintained roads, a variety of wildlife that keeps children engaged, and the boat safari on Lake Ihema is a highlight for all ages. Magashi Camp welcomes families with tailored activities and multiple-suite configurations. The dry season (June–September) is the most comfortable time for family travel.

Yes — and it is one of our most popular itinerary combinations. Akagera sits in eastern Rwanda while Volcanoes National Park (home to the mountain gorillas) is in the far northwest. The drive between them takes approximately 4 hours, making it very feasible. A classic 7-day Rwanda itinerary combines 3 nights in Akagera for Big Five safari with 3 nights in Volcanoes for gorilla trekking — the perfect blend of adventure and wildlife.

Akagera's defining feature is its extraordinary diversity of ecosystems within a single park — savannah, mountain, swamp and lake habitats all converge here. Lake Ihema's boat safaris offer a water-based wildlife experience that few African parks can match. The conservation story is deeply moving: Akagera was brought back from the brink by visionary partnerships, making every sighting of a lion or rhino feel genuinely meaningful.
