Meet the Five

Africa's Most Legendary Wildlife

Each of the Big Five demands a different approach, habitat, and moment — and each sighting holds a power that simply cannot be replicated anywhere else on Earth.

01 / 05

Lion

Africa's apex predator. Best seen in the Masai Mara and Serengeti, where large prides roam the open savannah with supreme confidence.

Jun–Oct 95% success Vulnerable Dawn & Dusk
"A lion's roar can be heard from 8 kilometres away — a primal sound that defines the African night."
02 / 05

Leopard

The most elusive of the five. The Mara's leopard-rich thickets offer the most intimate encounters possible, often at just a few metres.

Jul–Oct 70% success Vulnerable Late Afternoon
"Leopards cache their kills in trees to protect them from lions and hyenas — a behaviour often spotted at dusk."
03 / 05

Elephant

The gentle giants of Amboseli and Chobe move in vast family herds — a humbling experience that redefines your sense of scale.

Year-Round 99% success Endangered Early Morning
"Elephants communicate using infrasound — low-frequency rumbles that travel through the ground for miles."
04 / 05

Rhino

The rarest and most precious of the five. Ol Pejeta and Ngorongoro offer the best remaining chances to see both black and white rhino.

Jun–Sep 60% success Critically Endangered Mid-Morning
"Black rhino mothers carry their calves for 15–16 months — the longest gestation of any rhino species."
05 / 05

Buffalo

Deceptively formidable. Massive herds fill the plains of the Okavango and Mara — and old dagga boys are among Africa's most unpredictable animals.

Year-Round 95% success Near Threatened All Day
"Cape buffalo herds are led by experienced matriarchs who remember water sources across vast drought-stricken landscapes."

Words From the Wild

"

We watched a leopard descend from an acacia tree just before sunset. Our guide said he'd been tracking her for three hours — and he was right. Five metres away. Absolute silence.

The elephants walked so close we could hear their footsteps in the dry grass. My six-year-old still talks about it every night. Kudu made it feel like the bush belonged only to us.

We had the Ngorongoro Crater floor entirely to ourselves for almost an hour. A lioness walked past our vehicle at five metres. Absolute silence. I have never felt so small and so alive.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and Cape buffalo — were originally named by big-game hunters as the five most dangerous animals to pursue on foot. Today the term is synonymous with the ultimate African wildlife encounter and responsible safari tourism.

Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania offers the best single-destination chance to see all five. For a multi-destination itinerary, combining the Masai Mara (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo) with Ol Pejeta (rhino) or the Serengeti with Ngorongoro is the most reliable strategy.

We recommend a minimum of five nights in the bush. Seven to ten nights gives you the best chance of seeing all five species without rushing. If rhino is your priority, we recommend building in dedicated time at Ngorongoro Crater or Ol Pejeta Conservancy.

There is no single answer — it depends on which species matter most to you. Kenya's Masai Mara is unrivalled for lion and elephant. Tanzania's Ngorongoro Crater is the best single location for rhino. Uganda's Queen Elizabeth Park offers exceptional tree-climbing lions and large buffalo herds. Many guests combine two or more destinations for the complete experience.

Yes — all five species are resident year-round in our key destinations. The dry season (June to October) brings the most reliable sightings, as wildlife concentrates around water sources. Akagera and Ngorongoro Crater offer exceptional viewing in every month of the year.

Absolutely. Most of our private reserves welcome children of all ages on game drives. Some lodges have dedicated children's programmes and family-sized vehicles. Walking safaris typically require children to be 16 or older. We design every family itinerary with child-friendly activities, pace and accommodation in mind.
