Watamu — A UNESCO Biosphere Paradise

Watamu is not just a beach; it is a living tapestry of marine and forest ecosystems recognised by UNESCO as a World Biosphere Reserve. Its famous "seven islands" bay — where small palm-fringed islets rise from turquoise water at low tide — is one of the most photographed seascapes on the East African coast. Behind the beach, the Arabuko Sokoke Forest, the largest coastal forest in East Africa, shelters elephants, leopards and over 230 bird species.

At the heart of the Watamu experience lies the Watamu Marine National Park — a protected underwater sanctuary of extraordinary coral diversity. Over 600 species of fish, green and hawksbill turtles, reef sharks, mantas and whale sharks all call these waters home. The coral gardens here are among the healthiest in the Indian Ocean, making every snorkel or dive an immersion in living colour.

As Nairobi-based specialists, Kudu Untamed Safaris knows the Kenyan coast intimately — from the most exclusive north-coast villas to the quietest snorkelling coves. Let us craft your perfect Watamu escape, whether pure coastal bliss or a bush-and-beach adventure.

Why Watamu

Six Reasons Watamu is Kenya's Most Serene Coast

From pristine coral gardens to ancient ruins in the forest — Watamu blends marine wonder, history and tranquillity like nowhere else.

01

Watamu Marine National Park

A protected underwater paradise where vibrant coral gardens teem with over 600 species of fish. Snorkel with green turtles, reef sharks and clouds of butterflyfish in water so clear you can see 30 metres. One of the healthiest coral reef systems in the Indian Ocean.

02

The Gede Ruins

A 13th-century Swahili stone town hidden in the Arabuko Sokoke Forest. Wander among mosques, palaces and pillar tombs swallowed by the jungle for centuries. The site is one of the most atmospheric historical attractions on the Kenyan coast — and a hauntingly beautiful experience.

03

Mida Creek Sunset Dhow Cruises

A vast tidal creek fringed by mangroves, Mida Creek is a haven for birdlife and a magical setting for sunset dhow cruises. Glide through calm channels at high tide as herons, flamingos and kingfishers feed in the shallows. The sunsets here are utterly unforgettable.

04

Sea Turtle Conservation

Watamu is a vital nesting site for green and hawksbill turtles. Local conservation groups protect nests along the beach and run rehabilitation centres where you can learn about these ancient mariners. Between March and October, hatchling releases offer a deeply moving wildlife encounter.

05

Blue Lagoon & Seven Islands

Watamu's most iconic view — a bay of seven small islands rising from impossibly turquoise water. The Blue Lagoon offers the calmest, most sheltered swimming on the coast, with a sandy seabed and gentle currents perfect for families and paddleboarding.

06

Arabuko Sokoke Forest

The largest coastal forest in East Africa, Arabuko Sokoke is a biodiversity hotspot home to elephants, leopards, the endangered Ader's duiker and over 230 bird species. Guided forest walks reveal a completely different side of the Kenyan coast — cool, shaded and full of life.

Historical Journey

The Gede Ruins — A Lost Swahili City

Hidden in the depths of Arabuko Sokoke Forest lies one of East Africa's most atmospheric historical sites — the Gede Ruins. This 13th-century Swahili stone city was mysteriously abandoned in the 17th century and reclaimed by the jungle for centuries. Walking through its moss-covered mosques, crumbling palaces and ancient pillar tombs, with giant fig and baobab trees growing through the coral-stone walls, is an experience that feels like stepping into a lost world. The site museum displays ceramics from as far as Persia, China and Venice — testament to Gede's importance as a medieval trading hub.

  • Guided tour of the 13th-century Swahili ruins
  • Museum with ceramics from China, Persia and Venice
  • Combine with Arabuko Sokoke forest walk
  • Early morning visit recommended for cooler temperatures

Magical Evening

Mida Creek Dhow Cruise & Sunset Dining

As the afternoon heat softens into the golden hour, board a traditional wooden dhow and set sail across the mirror-still waters of Mida Creek. The mangrove-fringed lagoon reflects every shade of orange and pink as the sun sinks behind the Arabuko Sokoke Forest. Herons and kingfishers make their last forays of the day, and the only sound is the creak of the dhow's sail and the lapping of water. Your cruise culminates in a seafood dinner served on a private sandbank or floating platform — freshly caught fish, prawns and lobster grilled over coals under a canopy of stars.

  • Sunset dhow cruise across Mida Creek
  • Fresh seafood dinner on a sandbank
  • Spectacular birdlife and mangrove scenery
  • Private charters for couples and small groups

Common Questions

Watamu — FAQs

Our team answers the questions we hear most often from guests planning their Watamu coastal escape.

August to March offers the finest conditions — warm, dry and with calm, clear seas that make the Marine Park snorkelling truly world-class. January and February are the hottest and driest months, offering flawless beach weather. The long rains (April to June) bring lush green landscapes, excellent value rates and very few tourists, though some water activities may be affected by rougher seas. July's Kusi winds make it the prime season for kitesurfing and windsurfing enthusiasts.

Watamu and Diani both offer spectacular beaches and marine parks, but they have distinctly different characters. Diani is larger, livelier and more developed — with a 17km beach strip of bars, restaurants and water sports. Watamu is smaller, quieter and more refined — offering a more tranquil, sophisticated atmosphere with exceptional marine conservation, ancient ruins and fewer crowds. Both are excellent choices; the best depends on whether you prefer Diani's energy or Watamu's serenity. Many guests visit both on a coastal itinerary.

Absolutely — Watamu is one of the best places in East Africa to see sea turtles. Green and hawksbill turtles are resident in the Marine Park and seen on virtually every snorkelling trip. Between March and October, female turtles come ashore at night to lay their eggs on Watamu's beaches. Local conservation groups protect these nests, and between April and November you can witness hatchling releases, when dozens of tiny turtles make their first epic journey to the ocean — a deeply moving wildlife experience.

Watamu is one of the easiest beach destinations to pair with a Kenyan safari. Tsavo East National Park is just a 2-hour drive away, making the Watamu + Tsavo combination one of our most popular bush-and-beach itineraries. A typical trip might include 2–3 nights in Tsavo East followed by 4–5 nights in Watamu. For a wider circuit, Watamu also combines well with the Maasai Mara and Amboseli via internal flights through Nairobi. Our team can design the perfect safari-to-beach transition.

Watamu is exceptionally family-friendly. The Blue Lagoon offers calm, shallow swimming in sheltered waters that are ideal for children. The Marine Park snorkelling is safe and engaging, and the Gede Ruins and turtle conservation centres provide wonderful educational experiences. Many resorts offer family suites, kids' clubs and child-friendly dining. Watamu's quieter, more relaxed atmosphere makes it particularly well-suited to families with younger children who may find Diani's larger strip overwhelming.

For peak season (August to March, especially Christmas and New Year), we recommend booking 6–9 months in advance. Watamu's best resorts fill quickly, particularly during the European winter season when the north coast is at its busiest. For low and shoulder season (April to July), 2–4 months notice is usually sufficient. Dhow cruises, Marine Park trips and turtle experiences should be pre-booked through us to ensure availability. Contact our team for current availability and expert recommendations.
