Maasai Mara
National Reserve
Where the Great Migration thunders across the Mara River and golden plains pulse with the drama of Africa's greatest predator-prey spectacle.
Plan Your Mara SafariThe Maasai Mara — Untamed, Unforgettable
Stretching across the sun-scorched savannah of southwest Kenya, the Maasai Mara National Reserve is Africa's most celebrated wildlife destination — and for good reason. Its vast, unbroken grasslands support one of the continent's densest concentrations of predators: lion, leopard, cheetah and hyena patrol the plains in extraordinary numbers.
Between July and October, the reserve transforms into the stage for the Great Wildebeest Migration — the largest overland mammal migration on Earth. Over 1.5 million wildebeest, accompanied by zebra and gazelle, cross the crocodile-filled Mara River in scenes of raw, breathtaking drama. It is simply one of the world's greatest natural spectacles.
As Nairobi-based safari specialists, Kudu Untamed Safaris knows the Maasai Mara intimately — from the best private conservancies for exclusive game drives to the luxury tented camps that offer the perfect balance of wilderness and comfort. Let us craft your dream Mara itinerary.

There is nothing on Earth quite like watching hundreds of thousands of wildebeest plunge into the crocodile-filled Mara River. Raw, primal and utterly unforgettable.

The flight culminates in a champagne bush breakfast in the middle of the plains, served by white-gloved staff.

Maasai Mara Safari — FAQs
Our team answers the questions we hear most often from guests planning their first or return Maasai Mara safari.
July to October is considered peak season, when the Great Migration is in the Mara and wildebeest river crossings occur regularly. August and September typically offer the most crossings. However, January and February are excellent for big cats with far fewer crowds, while June sees the herds beginning to arrive and offers good value. The Mara rewards year-round visits — every season delivers remarkable wildlife.
Both offer outstanding game viewing. The National Reserve is the core of the Great Migration action and home to the famous river crossing points. Private conservancies surrounding it offer exclusivity — fewer vehicles, night game drives, walking safaris and a more intimate experience. We typically recommend a combination: 2 nights in a conservancy for the exclusive experience and 2 nights in the reserve during Migration season for the river crossings.
Absolutely. Many Mara camps are family-friendly and offer dedicated children's programmes, junior ranger activities and family tented suites. The reserve is excellent for families as wildlife is abundant and game drives are highly active. We recommend the dry season (July–October or January–February) for family visits, with camps that have in-house child-minding services and shallow swimming pools.
The Maasai Mara (Kenya) and the Serengeti (Tanzania) are part of the same continuous ecosystem separated by an international border. The wildebeest Migration moves between both. The Mara is smaller, more intimate and the prime location for river crossings. The Serengeti is vast, with a wider range of landscapes and the calving season spectacle in February. Many of our itineraries combine both for the ultimate Migration experience.
Yes — all Big Five species are present in the Maasai Mara, though rhinoceros sightings are less frequent as the population remains small and is largely confined to the Mara Triangle. Lion, leopard, elephant and buffalo are seen regularly, often multiple times per day. The Mara has the highest concentration of big cats in Africa, making predator sightings extraordinarily reliable.
During Migration season (July–October), the best luxury camps book up 10–18 months in advance. We strongly recommend contacting us at least 9–12 months before your intended travel dates for peak season. For shoulder and low season (November–June), 3–6 months notice is usually sufficient, though popular camps can fill quickly even then. Contact our team as early as possible to secure your preferred dates.
