Arusha National Park
The gateway to the Northern Circuit. Nestled at the foot of Mount Meru, Arusha is where your Tanzanian adventure truly begins — a lush, vibrant landscape of lakes, forest and volcanic peaks.
Plan Your Arusha SafariArusha — Where Tanzania's Wild Heart Begins
Nestled at the foot of Mount Meru, Tanzania's second-highest peak, Arusha National Park is a compact but remarkably beautiful wilderness that serves as the perfect introduction to the country's legendary Northern Circuit. The park's diverse habitats — from open savannah and acacia woodlands to montane forest, alpine heath and the stunning Momella Lakes — support an extraordinary variety of wildlife in a relatively small area.
What makes Arusha truly special is its accessibility: located just 30 minutes from Arusha town and Kilimanjaro International Airport, it is the most accessible national park in Tanzania. Here you can enjoy a game drive in the morning, a walking safari in the afternoon, and a canoe trip on a flamingo-fringed lake — all in a single day. The park is also the starting point for the multi-day Mount Meru trek, a spectacular and far quieter alternative to Kilimanjaro.
As East African safari specialists with deep experience across Tanzania, Kudu Untamed Safaris knows Arusha National Park intimately — from the best lake views for flamingo photography to the most rewarding Mount Meru trekking routes. Let us build your perfect Arusha experience.
Six Reasons to Start Your Safari in Arusha
From Mount Meru trekking to canoeing among flamingos, Arusha National Park delivers remarkable diversity in a compact, accessible package.
Mount Meru Trekking
Tanzania's second-highest peak at 4,566m, Mount Meru offers a spectacular multi-day trek through forest, alpine moorland and rocky summit terrain. Far quieter than Kilimanjaro, it provides a challenging and deeply rewarding adventure with views across the Rift Valley to Kilimanjaro itself.
Momella Lakes & Canoe Safaris
A chain of seven shallow alkaline lakes fringed with pink flamingos, herons and pelicans — the Momella Lakes are the park's crown jewel. Canoe safaris allow you to paddle silently among hippos and waterbirds, with Mount Meru rising above the far shore in an unforgettable composition.
Walking Safaris
Arusha is one of the few Tanzanian parks where guided walking safaris are permitted. Accompanied by an armed ranger, you can explore the forest floor, learn about medicinal plants, track wildlife on foot and experience the bush from a perspective that game drives simply cannot match.
Coffee Plantation Tours
The slopes of Mount Meru are some of Tanzania's finest coffee-growing regions. A visit to a local plantation reveals the journey from cherry to cup — with tastings, farm walks and stunning views of the peak. The perfect cultural add-on to any Arusha itinerary.
Arusha Town & Cultural Heritage
Arusha town is a vibrant, multicultural hub — the safari capital of East Africa. Explore the Maasai Market for authentic crafts, visit the Cultural Heritage Centre's art collection, and dine in some of the continent's finest restaurants. The town itself is an integral part of the Tanzanian safari experience.

Arusha National Park is the ideal starting point for your Northern Circuit safari. Just 30 minutes from the airport, it offers a gentle introduction to Tanzanian wildlife before you venture to the Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangire — making it the perfect first stop on a classic Tanzania itinerary.

The canoe safari is a unique, silent and deeply immersive way to encounter the park's extraordinary birdlife and wetland mammals. It is one of Tanzania's most memorable half-day experiences and an essential addition to any Arusha itinerary.

Year-RoundExperience 02Mount Meru Trekking Expedition
Standing at 4,566m, Mount Meru is Tanzania's second-highest peak and one of Africa's most underrated trekking experiences. The 3–4 day ascent passes through dense montane forest (watch for colobus monkeys), giant heather, alpine moorland and finally a steep scramble to the rocky summit ridge. At the top, you are rewarded with one of Africa's great views — Kilimanjaro floating above the clouds on the eastern horizon. Far quieter than Kili, Meru offers a wilderness experience that the more famous peak simply cannot match.
- 3–4 day trek with overnight huts and camping
- Spectacular sunrise views of Kilimanjaro from the summit
- Forest walks pass colobus monkeys and diverse birdlife
- Guides, porters and all equipment provided
Coffee Plantation & Community Tour
The fertile volcanic soils of Mount Meru's lower slopes produce some of Tanzania's finest Arabica coffee. A guided plantation tour takes you through the full journey from cherry to cup — picking ripe red berries, learning about washing and roasting techniques, and finally tasting the finished product with views over the Meru foothills. Combined with a visit to a local Meru village, this cultural experience offers genuine insight into Tanzanian rural life and is a perfect complement to a morning game drive in the park.

Arusha Safari — FAQs
Our team answers the questions we hear most often from guests planning their Arusha visit.
The dry seasons — June to October and January to February — offer the best conditions for game viewing, walking safaris and Mount Meru trekking. However, Arusha National Park is productive year-round, and the rainy seasons (March–May and November–December) bring lush green landscapes, fewer visitors and excellent birding. The park's compact size means wildlife is always accessible. For Mount Meru trekking, June to September offers the most reliable weather conditions.
Absolutely — and for different reasons. The Serengeti is vast, wild and focused on Big Five game viewing and the Great Migration. Arusha National Park is intimate, accessible and offers experiences you will not find elsewhere: canoeing among flamingos on the Momella Lakes, walking safaris through montane forest, and the incredible Mount Meru trek. It is the perfect warm-up or cool-down for a Northern Circuit safari. Many of our guests spend their first day in Arusha adjusting to the time zone and enjoying a gentle game drive before heading deeper into Tanzania.
Mount Meru (4,566m) is significantly lower than Kilimanjaro (5,895m) but is still a serious high-altitude trek requiring good fitness and acclimatisation. Where Meru excels is in wildlife (you walk through forest with monkeys and buffalo), scenery (a dramatic summit ridge and crater) and solitude — you will see far fewer people on Meru than on Kilimanjaro. It is also approximately half the cost. Many experienced trekkers consider Meru the more beautiful and rewarding climb. It also serves as excellent acclimatisation for a subsequent Kilimanjaro attempt.
Arusha National Park is home to buffalo, leopard and elephant (the latter are occasional visitors from the wider ecosystem rather than permanent residents). Lion are not present in the park, and rhino sightings are extremely rare. However, Arusha compensates with a wealth of other wildlife — large giraffe herds, zebra, waterbuck, hippo, colobus monkeys, flamingos and over 400 bird species. For Big Five game drives, we recommend combining Arusha with Tarangire, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti on a comprehensive Northern Circuit itinerary.
The classic Northern Circuit itinerary: 1–2 nights in Arusha (park visit and coffee tours), then 2–3 nights in Tarangire (elephants and baobabs), 2 nights in Ngorongoro Crater (world's most spectacular wildlife caldera), and 3–4 nights in the Serengeti (Great Migration and big cats). Return via Arusha or fly out from the Serengeti airstrip. This 9–12 day circuit is the gold standard for Tanzanian safaris. Kudu Untamed Safaris specialises in this exact routing and can tailor it to your preferences.
