Diani — Where the Forest Meets the Indian Ocean

Consistently voted Africa's leading beach destination, Diani Beach is the ultimate coastal retreat. Its 17-kilometre stretch of bone-white sand is protected by a fringing coral reef that keeps the lagoon waters calm, warm and crystal-clear. Behind the beach, ancient coastal forest shelters troops of Angolan colobus monkeys and a rich tapestry of birdlife.

Beyond the shore lies the Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park — a protected underwater paradise where spinner dolphins arc through the waves, whale sharks glide in the deep channels and coral gardens teem with technicolour reef fish. From skydiving over the reef to dhow cruises at sunset, Diani offers the perfect fusion of adventure and serenity.

As Nairobi-based specialists, Kudu Untamed Safaris knows the Kenyan coast intimately — from the finest beachfront villas to the quietest snorkelling coves. Whether you are adding a beach finale to a safari or planning a pure coastal escape, we will craft your perfect Diani itinerary.

Common Questions

Diani Beach — FAQs

Our team answers the questions we hear most often from guests planning their Diani Beach escape.

September to March offers the finest beach weather — hot, dry and with calm seas perfect for snorkelling, diving and dhow cruises. January and February are particularly glorious. July and August are also excellent, with cooler temperatures and consistent Kusi winds that make for prime kitesurfing conditions. The long rains (April to June) bring fewer crowds, lower prices and lush green landscapes, though some water activities may be restricted. Diani is genuinely enjoyable year-round — the best time depends on your priorities.

Yes — Diani is one of the safest swimming beaches on the East African coast. A fringing coral reef runs parallel to the shore, breaking the waves and creating a calm, shallow lagoon at all tides. There are no strong currents inside the reef, and the gradient is gentle. Children can paddle safely in the shallows. Always swim in areas patrolled by lifeguards where available, and be mindful of high tide when the lagoon deepens. Most resorts have designated swimming zones.

Absolutely — the classic Kenya bush-and-beach combination is one of our most popular itineraries. Diani pairs perfectly with Amboseli (a short flight away) and the Maasai Mara. A typical itinerary would be 3 nights in the Mara, 2 nights in Amboseli and 4–5 nights in Diani — offering the complete Kenyan experience from the Great Migration to the Indian Ocean. We also recommend adding a night at Shimba Hills for a unique coastal forest safari. All internal flights and transfers are arranged seamlessly.

Kisite-Mpunguti is East Africa's richest marine reserve. Spinner and bottlenose dolphins are seen on virtually every visit, often approaching the dhow. Green and hawksbill turtles are common, as are reef sharks, moray eels, octopus and an extraordinary diversity of reef fish — over 600 species. Between July and October, migrating humpback whales pass through the channel. Whale sharks are occasionally spotted between November and March. The coral gardens are pristine and thriving.

Yes — Diani is exceptionally family-friendly. The calm reef-protected lagoon is ideal for children's swimming, and many resorts offer kids' clubs, babysitting services and family suites. Dhow safaris are safe and engaging for children, and the Colobus Trust sanctuary offers a wonderful educational visit. The main considerations are the tropical sun (rigorous sun protection essential) and malaria prophylaxis for younger children. We recommend family-friendly resorts and can advise on age-appropriate activities.

For peak season (December to March, July to October), we recommend booking 6–9 months in advance — the best resorts fill up very quickly. Christmas and New Year at Diani's top properties often book a full year ahead. For low and shoulder season (April to June, November), 2–4 months notice is usually sufficient. Dhow safaris and cave restaurant reservations should be booked well in advance regardless of season. Contact our team as early as possible to secure your preferred dates.
