Kibale — Chimpanzees, Crater Lakes & Canopy

Kibale National Park contains one of the loveliest and most varied tracts of tropical forest in Uganda. Its dense, lush canopy is home to over 1,500 chimpanzees — the highest concentration in East Africa — along with 12 other primate species including red colobus, L'Hoest's monkey and the grey-cheeked mangabey. Tracking these close relatives through the misty forest is one of Africa's most thrilling wildlife experiences.

But Kibale offers far more than primates. The park's 795 km² embrace montane forests, wetlands and grasslands, sheltering 375 bird species, over 250 butterfly species and a critical elephant corridor linking to Queen Elizabeth National Park. The nearby Ndali-Kasenda Crater Lakes add a breathtaking scenic dimension — deep blue lakes filling volcanic craters, ringed by lush green hills and dotted with luxury eco-lodges.

As Uganda primate specialists, Kudu Untamed Safaris knows Kibale intimately — from the best chimpanzee tracking times to the most rewarding wetland walks and crater lake sundowner spots. Let us craft your perfect primate adventure.

Chimpanzee Tracking in the Forest Canopy

There is magic in the moment you first hear chimpanzee calls echoing through the forest — a rising crescendo of hoots and screams that signals you are close. Your guide leads you through the dense undergrowth, and then suddenly they are there: chimpanzees feeding in the trees, grooming each other, juveniles tumbling and playing. Kibale's Kanyanchu sector offers the highest success rate for chimpanzee tracking in Africa, with habituated groups encountered on the vast majority of treks. It is a thrilling, deeply moving wildlife encounter that rivals gorilla trekking in its emotional power.

  • Guided tracking sessions at 8:00 AM daily
  • Up to 1 hour with the chimpanzees once located

Common Questions

Kibale Safari — FAQs

Our team answers the questions we hear most often from guests planning their Kibale chimpanzee tracking adventure.

Chimpanzee tracking is excellent year-round, but the best conditions are during the dry seasons — December to February and June to July. Trails are less muddy, visibility is clearer and chimpanzees are easier to locate when fruit is abundant. The peak period (July–August and December–January) offers the finest conditions. The wet seasons (March–May and September–November) bring lush forest, spectacular birding and far fewer visitors, but trails can be challenging. Regardless of when you visit, the chimpanzees are there — Kibale's habituation programme ensures sightings are reliable throughout the year.

Chimpanzee tracking in Kibale is generally less demanding than gorilla trekking in Bwindi. The terrain is less steep, the forest is less dense at ground level, and the trails are well-maintained. Treks typically last 2–4 hours, with the actual chimpanzee encounter lasting 1 hour once the group is located. Porters are available for hire to carry your bag and assist on the trail. Reasonable fitness is recommended, but the activity is accessible to most visitors, including families with children and older travellers.

Standard chimpanzee tracking involves a guided walk to locate a habituated group, followed by 1 hour of observation. The Chimpanzee Habituation Experience (CHEX) is a full-day experience where you join researchers and trackers as they work with a semi-habituated community. You spend up to 8 hours with the chimpanzees — watching, learning and participating in the habituation process. CHEX is more expensive but offers an unparalleled deep immersion into chimpanzee behaviour and is one of Africa's most exclusive wildlife experiences.

Absolutely — Kibale is perfectly positioned for multi-park Uganda itineraries. The classic circuit combines Kibale (2–3 nights for chimpanzees) with Queen Elizabeth National Park (1–2 nights for tree-climbing lions and boat safaris) and Bwindi (3 nights for gorilla trekking). The parks are connected by good roads, making for a seamless 10–14 day itinerary. Kibale also works well as a stand-alone 3-day primate-focused trip from Kampala or Entebbe for those with limited time.

Chimpanzee tracking permits are limited to approximately 90 per day, so advance booking is essential. For peak season (June–July and December–January), we recommend booking at least 4–6 months ahead. For the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience — which is limited to just 4 participants per day — 6–12 months advance booking is advised. For shoulder and low season, 2–3 months notice is usually sufficient. Contact our team as early as possible to secure your permits and preferred lodge.
