Zanzibar
A fusion of Arabian nights and African rhythm — where the ancient labyrinth of Stone Town meets the crystal-clear reefs of the Indian Ocean and the scent of cloves drifts across paradise beaches.
Explore ZanzibarZanzibar — Where History and Horizons Meet
Zanzibar is more than an island; it is a sensory journey. Breathe in the scent of cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg in the lush interior, or wander the narrow alleys of Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site where intricately carved wooden doors whisper secrets of the Sultanate that once ruled these shores. Every corner reveals a story — from the lively Forodhani night market to the silent majesty of the Old Fort.
Beyond the historic heart, Zanzibar's coastline is a string of tropical perfection. Nungwi in the north offers sweeping white sands, turquoise shallows and spectacular sunsets. Mnemba Atoll, a protected marine reserve, delivers world-class snorkelling and diving among green turtles, reef sharks and clouds of tropical fish. Kizimkazi in the south is famed for its resident pods of bottlenose and humpback dolphins.
As East Africa specialists, Kudu Untamed Safaris knows Zanzibar intimately — from the finest private villas on the north coast to the most memorable spice tour experiences. Let us craft your perfect island escape, whether standalone or combined with a Tanzanian safari.
Six Reasons Zanzibar is East Africa's Ultimate Island
From ancient stone cities to pristine coral atolls, Zanzibar blends culture, history and tropical beauty like nowhere else.
Stone Town — A Living Museum
Wander the labyrinthine streets of this UNESCO World Heritage site, where Omani forts, Anglican cathedrals, Persian baths and carved Swahili doors tell the story of centuries of trade, conquest and cultural fusion.
Mnemba Atoll — Pristine Coral Paradise
A protected marine reserve off the north-east coast, Mnemba Atoll offers some of the finest snorkelling and diving in the Indian Ocean. Swim with green turtles, reef sharks, moray eels and over 600 species of tropical fish in crystal-clear water.
Spice Plantation Tours
Zanzibar's nickname — the Spice Island — is earned. Visit a working plantation and taste, touch and smell cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla, lemongrass and black pepper, all grown on the island's fertile soil.
Nungwi's White Sands
Zanzibar's most famous beach — a sweeping arc of powder-white sand meeting impossibly turquoise water. Nungwi offers world-class beach resorts, superb sunset dhow cruises and a vibrant Swahili fishing village atmosphere.
Jozani Forest & Red Colobus
The only place on Earth where you can encounter the endemic Zanzibar Red Colobus monkey, Jozani Forest is a groundwater-fed sanctuary of mahogany trees, boardwalk trails and extraordinary forest birdlife.
Forodhani Night Market & Swahili Cuisine
As dusk falls over Stone Town, Forodhani Gardens transforms into East Africa's most atmospheric street-food market. Feast on Zanzibar pizza, grilled seafood skewers, sugar-cane juice and tropical fruit under a blanket of stars.

How to Experience Zanzibar
From spice-scented plantation tours to underwater adventures at Mnemba — Zanzibar delivers experiences that linger long after you leave.
Year-RoundExperience 01Mnemba Atoll — Snorkelling Paradise
Mnemba Atoll is the jewel of Zanzibar's marine world. A ring of ancient coral encircles a turquoise lagoon of extraordinary clarity, where the water seems to glow from within. Slip beneath the surface and enter a world of staggering colour — parrotfish, angelfish, butterflyfish and clownfish dart through coral formations, while green turtles glide past with serene indifference. Between July and October, humpback whales pass through the deeper channels, and reef sharks patrol the outer reef. It is, quite simply, the finest snorkelling East Africa has to offer.
- Half-day or full-day snorkelling trips from Nungwi
- Private dhow charters available for couples
- Green turtles and reef sharks sighted daily
- Professional dive centre on Mnemba Island
Stone Town Walking Tour & Forodhani Market
No visit to Zanzibar is complete without losing yourself in the maze of Stone Town. Your guided walk traces centuries of history — from the Sultan's Palace and the House of Wonders to the Anglican Cathedral built on the site of the former slave market. The carved doors, each with their own symbolic language, tell stories of prosperity, protection and faith. As dusk falls, Forodhani Gardens transforms into a vibrant night market where grills flame and the air fills with the aroma of Zanzibar pizza, grilled octopus and fresh sugarcane juice.
- Guided half-day walking tour of Stone Town
- Visit to the Old Fort, Sultan's Palace and slave market
- Forodhani evening food market experience
- Exclusive access to private museum collections
Year-RoundExperience 03The Spice Trail — A Feast for the Senses
Zanzibar earned its nickname — the Spice Island — through centuries of trade in cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and black pepper that once made the archipelago one of the world's most valuable territories. On a guided plantation tour, you will walk among spice trees, taste fresh vanilla pods, crush cinnamon bark between your fingers and smell the heady fragrance of ylang-ylang flowers. Your guide will explain the history, the harvesting process and the cultural significance of each spice — and you will leave with a profound appreciation for the flavours that shaped global trade routes.
- Half-day guided spice plantation tour
- Smell, taste and touch fresh spices on the tree
- Traditional Swahili lunch included
- Fruit tasting session with exotic tropical varieties

Zanzibar's accommodation is as diverse as its coastline. From the barefoot luxury of Nungwi's five-star resorts — with infinity pools overlooking the Indian Ocean — to the secluded eco-chic villas of the east coast where you wake to the sound of the tide, the island offers something for every style. Stone Town's boutique hotels, set in restored Omani mansions, provide a different kind of magic — rooftop terraces, carved four-poster beds and the call to prayer echoing through the alleys. For the ultimate escape, a private island lodge on Mnemba or Pemba delivers total seclusion.

Zanzibar — FAQs
Our team answers the questions we hear most often from guests planning their Zanzibar island escape.
June to October offers the finest conditions — dry, clear and perfect for diving at Mnemba Atoll. January and February are also excellent with hot sun and calm seas. The long rains (March to May) bring lush landscapes, fewer tourists and the best value rates, though some water activities may be restricted. November to December sees short rains that are typically brief and refreshing. Zanzibar is genuinely a year-round destination; the best time depends on whether you prioritise perfect beach weather or peaceful solitude.
Yes — Zanzibar is generally very safe, with welcoming locals and a well-established tourism infrastructure. Solo travellers will find Stone Town easy to navigate with a guide, and the beach resorts are secure and self-contained. Couples will love the romantic atmosphere, particularly at Nungwi sunsets, private dhow dinners and secluded east-coast resorts. Standard precautions apply — avoid walking alone at night in unlit areas, secure valuables and use reputable tour operators. Kudu Untamed Safaris ensures all our partners meet rigorous safety standards.
Absolutely — the Tanzania bush-and-beach combination is one of our most popular itineraries. A typical trip combines 3 nights in the Serengeti, 2 nights in Ngorongoro and 4–5 nights in Zanzibar. Direct flights connect the Serengeti airstrips to Zanzibar via Arusha or Dar es Salaam, making the transition seamless. You can go from tracking lions on the Serengeti plains to snorkelling at Mnemba Atoll in a single day. We handle all internal flights, transfers and logistics.
Zanzibar is a predominantly Muslim society, and modest dress is expected in Stone Town and local villages. For women, covering shoulders and knees is recommended — a lightweight scarf or pashmina is ideal. Men should avoid going bare-chested outside beach areas. Swimwear is absolutely fine at resorts, hotel pools and beach clubs. In Nungwi and the east-coast resorts, the dress code is relaxed. A little cultural sensitivity goes a long way and is warmly appreciated by locals.
While you can arrange a spice tour on arrival in Stone Town, we strongly recommend booking in advance through Kudu Untamed Safaris. Pre-arranged tours offer private guides, smaller groups, visits to less-commercial plantations and a higher-quality experience. A typical spice tour lasts about 3 hours, includes lunch in a traditional Swahili home and ensures you visit the most authentic working plantations rather than tourist-oriented displays. Advance booking also guarantees availability during peak season.
For peak season (June to October and December to February), we recommend booking 6–9 months in advance. Zanzibar's best resorts — particularly those on the north coast and private island properties — fill up very quickly. Christmas and New Year at top properties often book a full year ahead. For low and shoulder season (March to May, November), 2–4 months notice is usually sufficient. Mnemba Island Lodge and the most exclusive villas require the earliest booking. Contact our team for availability and recommendations.
